Weight and GLP-1 medicines
GLP-1 medicines copy a hormone your gut already makes after eating — the one that tells your brain you have had enough — which is why they reduce appetite rather than speed up metabolism.
What usually happens
They treat a condition, not a character flaw. Obesity is a medical condition with a strong biological set-point, which is why willpower alone so often fails and why medication can work where effort did not.
They are not for everyone, and they are not the only option. Whether one suits you depends on your weight history, your other conditions — diabetes, heart and kidney disease in particular — and what you have already tried.
Coverage is the practical catch. In Ontario, public and private coverage for these medicines varies a great deal by product and by indication, and cost is often what decides the plan rather than the medicine itself. Worth raising early rather than at the pharmacy.
They work while you take them. Appetite and weight tend to return if the medicine stops, which makes it a long-term decision rather than a course of treatment — one worth understanding before you start.
At your appointment
We will go through your weight history, what you have tried, and your other conditions — because several of them change which medicine makes sense, and some make one strongly preferable.
We will talk about what you want from treatment. Weight is one goal; blood sugar, blood pressure, joints, sleep and heart risk are others, and they can point to different choices.
If we start one, it begins at a low dose and increases slowly. Nausea is the common early effect and usually settles; going up slowly is how that is managed.
We will agree what we are watching and when to review, including what would make us stop.
Worth asking
- Given my health history, is one of these a reasonable option for me?
- What would it cost me, and is any of it covered?
- What side effects should I expect early on, and what would mean I should call?
- What happens if I stop — and how long would you expect me to stay on it?
- What else besides medicine would make a difference for me?
